The proposal comes after Southern View reported in June residents were fed up with youths congregating in vehicles on the scenic streets at night, playing loud music, smoking bongs, shouting and partying. Two options were considered by the board: Install the restrictions, or do nothing.

Consultation on the proposal was carried out between August 9-25, and 62 people responded with 85 per cent in support of the restrictions. One person did not support the idea, saying it would only move the problem to other parts of the city. Others said it was long overdue and applauded the restrictions. It will cost about $2000 for the installation of signage and, if approved, the money will come from the city council’s traffic engineering fund, Ms Potter said.

In June, we revealed Vista Pl and Roystone Way residents on Huntsbury Hill are having to put up with young drivers blasting loud music, smoking cannabis and urinating near their properties. They had been to the police and the Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board, desperate to get a solution. On Friday, the community board recommended to the city council that vehicles under 3500kgs are banned on Vista Pl and Roystone Way between 10pm and 5am. The ban would not apply to a resident or “bona fide visitor”. The city council will decide on November 9 if it agrees. The hold up: Public consultation. Yacht club on board over park By Julia Evans THE MT Pleasant Yacht Club is happy to work with concerned parties to make Scott Park better for everyone. A new working group met to discuss issues of water and park access, safety and general landscaping. And yacht club immediate past commodore Tim Prickett said following the meeting, everyone was on the same page. “Essentially there were three thrusts to the meeting . . . accessibility of park, water and Darrell beautification,” he Latham said. Those at the recent meeting included Linwood-CentralHeathcote Community Board chairwoman Sally Buck and members Darrell Latham, Tim Lindley and Jake McLellan. Also in attendance was Mt Pleasant Residents’ Association co-ordinator Jules Lee; Paul Roperfee of the Christchurch Coastal Pathway Group; Dr Prickett and Duncan Cartwright of the Mt Pleasant Yacht Club; Russell Mathieson and Allan Taylor of Canterbury Wind Sports; and

Mr Banks is going back to the city council to discuss the landscaping problems with an urban planner. The plan is to engage a landscape architect to work with the Scott Park working party.

In Brief ASHGROVE RESERVE WORK The Lower Cashmere Residents’ Association is working with city council parks staff in a bid to become involved in the maintenance of Ashgrove Reserve. The association formed Friends of the Ashgrove Reserve to undertake the work. It has already held a “weeding bee” in which most of the invasive weeds at the top of the reserve were removed and rubbish was cleared. FOREST OPEN The Te Oranga Waikura Urban Forest and Stormwater Basin in Woolston was opened last week at a public ceremony attended by city councillors and members of the Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board. The forest was planted on a site that was a part of Linwood College. The earthquake-damaged land off Ferry Rd was bought by the city council to use as a storage basin to reduce the risk of flooding. GRANT APPROVED The former Hoon Hay Children’s Volunteer Library is now being leased by the Hoon Hay Community Association. The group will operate it as a bookable community space on Hoon Hay Rd while the city council investigates the building’s future.

sobering story with students I should’ve said: ‘Stop. Please pull over, I’m not comfortable, will you please let me out.’ It’s simple. That was the moment that changed my life forever. He was rounding a corner too fast on Remuera Rd in a 50km/h zone, going twice the speed limit-plus. He hit a power pole exactly where I was seated. We went through a garage door and halfway through a brick wall. I was in a coma for a month. When I woke up, I didn’t know I was there, I didn’t know what had happened because I don’t remember this night. I don’t remember a year and a half before this night or a year and a half after this night. Three years of my life is gone and I feel like I’m telling stories about another person. But these were my mistakes. It has affected my life hugely. I have diabetes, epilepsy, splenectomy – it took my spleen. These are the scars from one, two, three, four, five bad mistakes in one evening. I even had to have part of my skull replaced with titanium plating.

My left leg was partially replaced with a titanium rod and behind this metal front is the part of my brain that was most damaged. Sure, I damaged the left and right lobe but the frontal lobe is what makes it hard to behave correctly, behave socially correctly and manage my own life. I can’t plan. I work with six carers part time, 24/7. Every single day of my life is planned by someone else. That was not my plan when I was back at high school, this was not my plan when I was 17 years of age. But I made those mistakes. Partial loss of sight, partial loss of hearing, partial loss of smell. My left eye I can only see when I look in one direction. My right eye, I can’t see my hand when it’s right there. My left ear is deaf, which is a big bummer. I only have eight per cent taste left, which is a real bummer – I was a big food person. Not so much anymore. All of these things, all of these injuries, all of this crap in my life could’ve been prevented by

just thinking before I did those things. Before I finish this speech, I just have a few questions for you. How would you think, how would you feel if you were in my position? How would you feel having all of this happen to you and you were in the middle of it? What would you do to stop it again? And how would you live? Because every day I get up, I feel like I have less motivation. Every day I get up, it’s hard. There are three things you have to remember. Don’t drink and drive. Come on, it’s not that hard, is it? Second thing, (when you) hop into a car, put your seat belt on. It’s three seconds of your life. Put your seat belt on, even if you’re in the back seat. They save lives. Millions of lives. And next, if your friend is driving dangerously, if he’s driving fast, if he’s driving drunk – tell him to pull over, tell him to stop the car. You shouldn’t be embarrassed to ask because they should be the ones embarrassed for putting your life in danger. Thank you.

Call for cycleway to new sports hub By Emily O’Connell HALSWELL Community Project chairwoman Chrys Horn wants to see a better cycling route to the new Nga Puna Wai Sports Hub in Wigram. Dr Horn attended the Halswell Liaison Group meeting last week, where the request was made by members of the community. Residents also discussed the final 3D designs of the hub with city council staff. The first stage of the hub will see the athletics track up and running in March. The hockey turfs, tennis courts, rugby league fields and several other facilities will then be opened on the 32ha site between autumn next year and 2019. Dr Horn said the meeting was positive and a lot of great ideas were shared. “They [the designs] look good, I’m excited. It was nice to be able to input into some ideas around how the public might use that area. Not just seeing it as a sporting area, but also as a place people can go walking and things,” she said. Dr Horn said there were suggestions around the creation of a cycle route to the new hub that could go through Canterbury

Dr Horn said traffic was already a big problem in Halswell, so she would like to see more accessible bus, walking and cycling routes into the hub. “We need to encourage people to take the forms of transport which are less common,” she said. City council head of transport Lynette Ellis said stage one of

the hub has been designed for cycle access with safety in mind. “It includes a sealed, shared path connecting the sports hub to the nearby cycle network on Templetons Rd. This is a 2.5m sealed, shared path on the western side of Templetons Rd which runs from the shared path on State Highway 75 to the boundary of the site,” she said. Mrs Ellis said an existing gravel path would also link to the Little River major cycle route, which will be sealed and lit at a later stage. “The hub has a minimum of 146 cycle parks, including a

covered cycle park structure,” Mrs Ellis said. City council manager of recreational services David Bailey said residents at the meeting also wanted to know what kind of impact there might be on traffic along McMahon Dr and Augustine Dr. He said other suggestions included play and shaded areas, water fountains and some environmentally-friendly measures. “City council staff will continue to work closely with the community going forward as work continues on the project,” he said.

The tower rebuild should begin to become quite noticeable on Lyttelton’s skyline in the next few weeks,” Heritage New Zealand general manager Nick Chin said. The Timeball Tower will be finished by the end of April. Caves were once party central THE SOUND of music from concerts, picnics and parties rang through Taylors Mistake at the turn of the century when caves were turned into mansions. Janet Abbott became fascinated by the history of the area and the cave mansions that were once tucked between Boulder Bay and Taylors Mistake. She curated an exhibition last week of historic photographs of 18 cave baches and has written a book about their history based on interJanet Abbott views with people who once attended the parties in this unique community. “Not too many people know the full history of the area. We’ve uncovered quite a bit of new information,” Ms Abbott said. Friends of the owners would go to concert parties at the Theatre Royal, catch the last tram to Sumner and then walk over the hill in the dark to have a “hi de ho” at the bach, Ms Abbott said. “My fascination with these cave baches stems from memories of being rowed around the coast in the dingy by my

huts where fishermen could spend the night while catching crayfish or fishing on the morning tide. “The abundant fishing and the

hillsides heaving with rabbits provided food during the depression days. Families filled the baches. Children grew up fishing, boating and roaming the cliffs and caves.” However, three of them were grand Edwardian Cave baches, including the Pilgrim’s Rest, which was built by Alfred Osborn (known as the Pilgrim, who built the original Pilgrim’s Way

track), The Hermitage and Te Nui Ana. The baches were often made from timber from ships passing through the area. Before containers, ships secured their cargo with planks of wood, and once clear of the harbour they would throw this wood overboard creating “dunnage” that washed up along the coast. Concrete foundations remain from a few of the baches. The Pilgrim’s Rest had a camera obscura and the owner hosted picnic parties attended by women who would clamber down the rough track wearing ankle-length Edwardian dresses. The Hermitage was built in 1906 from timber salvaged from Fuller’s Old Theatre and the Main Exhibition building from the New Zealand International Exhibition which was held in Christchurch from 1906 to 1907. There was a bunk room for women and the cave was lit with kerosene lamps. Te Nui Ana, built in 1903, had three rooms, including a women’s bedroom, a men’s bunkroom and a staircase. The content of this page shows the busy life of a NZ secondary school. Education is about seeing the whole person and how these developmentally positive experiences enrich our students’ understanding of whom they are and broaden their outlook. They nurture students’ classroom focus by contextualising their learning and sowing the seeds of positive ambition. Linwood College believes in a ‘pathwayed curriculum’. This means the school, students and families knowing: 1. students’ past learning and skills as they come into LC from our partner primary schools and building on these successes 2. how the learning at LC connects to what the students want to do when they leave school. “What are my post-school pathways and how does my LC learning help me to achieve these pathways?” In this way learning is meaningful to the individual and strengths-based.

College's Car Club Connected to these student pathways are the national development of Kāhui Ako-Communities of Learning. Education, unfortunately, can have its share of short-term fads, but Kāhui Ako are not one of them. In fact, effective schools and communities have taking this approach for decades. Kāhui Ako are schools collaborating to ensure that the student is at the centre of all activity, not just in the individual school that they are in at the time, but as students progress in education from early childhood centres through their schooling to tertiary and the workplace. Linwood College is in two Kāhui Ako. Tamai is the schools of Bamford, Bromley, Linwood Ave, Linwood College, Linwood North, Tamariki, and Te Waka Unua. Aupaki is Heathcote Valley, Linwood College, Lyttelton, Our Lady Star of the Sea, Mt Pleasant, Redcliffs and Sumner. One practical outcome already of our Kāhui Ako has been a specific focus on enrichment with students from our schools getting together for very successful eight week enrichment programmes in Maths, Debating, Pasifika and with Technology to come. Coast to Coast Update Article by The Press’ Robert van Royen – Sept, 2017 (paraphrased) Six Linwood College pupils are competing in the Tough Mudder event alongside Richie McCaw in Auckland in November, thanks to iSport Foundation and Coast-to-Coast Rangers. Linwood College’s Mapu Uasi, Moahengi Ngauamo, Juilan Elia-Lui, Tupito Saofai and Kyle Amer couldn't contain their excitement when they heard the news that they would be competing. They will all do the 20km mud and obstacle course, which is designed to test physical strength, stamina and mental grit.

McCaw's Foundation contacted Jess De Bont, who is currently training the pupils for next year's Coast-to-Coast and suggested the Tough Mudder event to her. "It's an amazing opportunity – once in a life time stuff," she said. “Auckland is a really good lead up for the Coastto-Coast,” said Jess De Bont.

Planting at Charlesworth Reserve Linwood College’s Year 7 & 8 students did an awesome job during a day of planting at Charlesworth Reserve according to Karla Guerin, the Kiwi Can Coordinator from the Graeme Dingle Foundation. Karla said that the planting day (late last term) was very hot and windy but the students all persevered and gave it their best. She said that it was great to see everyone fully engaged and work alongside each other with great teamwork.

Cultural Festival Linwood College presented three cultural dances at the 2017 Primary Schools’ Cultural Festival. Filipino students performed a sacred dance which was followed by a Samoan dance, ‘Do it, do it’ siva. The final item was a kapa haka and song ‘Kapi-oi-oi’. Our students made us proud while demonstrating the rich cultural diversity of our College.

Linwood College students’ Car Club had a great time at Ara Institute of Canterbury over Term 3, learning about all things cars. Under the careful guidance of Tutor Bernie Blanken, students learnt how to change tyres, jump-start flat batteries, strip down and rebuild a small fourstroke engine, disassemble and reassemble a gearbox as well as automotive welding. Students thanked Bernie by buying him a big box of chocolates at the end of the course.

Masking Up Part of the Year 9 Drama curriculum is to focus on Drama technologies, so last term students worked on Mask Making. This is an important technology which has links to Greek Theatre and Commedia Del'Arte, both types of Drama which the students will be researching when they get to their NCEA studies.

'The Change Over' Review As a Christchurch resident from the Eastern suburbs, the movie ‘The Changeover’ is certainly well worth watching, not just for its plot but for the visually striking scenes of post-quake Christchurch. Aerial views show the lead character’s home surrounded by a sea of vacant lots and low-lying swampy stretches. Looking across to the city, with randomly plonked containers and road works, these scenes also tell part of our story. Linwood College is listed on the credits as many of our students were acting extras.

Young inventor builds device to stop looting By Julia Evans MICHAEL HANN likes fixing things. The 18-year-old always has. His earliest memory is helping his dad, Jody, put an electric motor on a tricycle. “When I see a problem, I like to think of ways to fix or improve it,” he said. He saw a problem he could solve when medication and hearing equipment was stolen from a North New Brighton home during the tsunami evacuation after the Kaikoura earthquake last November. “Seeing the looting when the earthquake happened inspired me to create this product,” he said. So he designed a security system to be deployed in a natural disaster when the power goes out, and now

he’s a finalist in the ASB Bright Sparks competition. It’s called TEMS, which Michael said stands for “temporary emergency monitoring system”. The invention acts as a battery charger for devices and a place to keep belongings locked inside during a disaster. It also has an alarm to keep houses safe when evacuated. It is triggered by the rocking caused by an earthquake and lights up an exit path. Michael’s now working on connecting TEMS to an app which would send a text if someone breaks in. “I really want to get it connected up to a phone network so it sends out a text or notification through an app,” he said. Michael will fly to Auckland on November 7 to attend the Bright Sparks

awards evening. “It’s on the same night as my last high school prize-giving, but I’ve decided to go up to Auckland instead,” he said. With him will be his proud dad, from who Michael may have inherited the “fix it” gene. Mr Hann’s job involves repairing electronics for the police. “He doesn’t help me that much on my projects anymore,” Michael said. He spends his free time on Trade Me, buying broken items to upgrade. “Sometimes it’s not even fixing things; I just like to make improvements like in my bedroom. I made a motorised blind to wake me up in the morning,” he said. Next year the budding inventor will study engineering at Canterbury University.
